Salary Range: $95,000 - $115,000 commensurate with experience

Position Summary
The Director of Communications plans and directs a comprehensive marketing, communications, and public relations program to build and sustain awareness of the Community Foundation and its impact among donors, prospective donors, professional advisors, nonprofit organizations, elected officials, and civic and opinion leaders throughout New York’s Capital Region.
This position serves as the Foundation’s chief storyteller and brand steward, ensuring that all external and internal communications are current, consistent, and reflective of the Foundation’s mission, values, and strategic priorities. The Director of Communications works under the direct leadership of the President & CEO and collaboratively with the VP, Development and all staff to advance the Foundation’s visibility and community impact. Special emphasis is placed on inspiring philanthropy in the region.
Organizational goals include expanding and diversifying giving opportunities, creating clear, intentional and inclusive messaging and storytelling that celebrates the impact of local giving.
Key Responsibilities
Brand Management & Strategic Communications
- Develop, implement, and manage the Foundation’s annual communications plan in alignment with the mission, strategic plan and organizational goals.
- Ensure all public-facing communications are consistent in content, quality, tone, familiar voice and visual identity across all platforms and functional areas: Community Leadership and Grantmaking; Development and Donor Stewardship; Finance and Accounting; and Governance.
- Serve as the lead coordinator with outside vendors, designers, and consultants on all marketing and communications projects.
- Develop measurements and reporting for evaluating the effectiveness of marketing and communications activities.
Content Development & Print Materials
- Write, design, and produce (or oversee third-party design and production of) all printed and digital materials, including collateral, event invitations, newsletters, and marketing materials.
- Lead the development of the Community Foundation’s Annual Report, including research, content writing, vendor coordination, budgeting, and factchecking.
- Create compelling donor-facing communications, including fund informational materials, annual appeal materials, and donor statements.
- Lead essential storytelling ventures with local media and business outlets through earned media - Community Foundation's 2025 Raise the Region luncheon

Digital Communications & Social Media
- Manage and continuously improve the Foundation’s website - The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region including content updates, design, and search engine optimization. Regularly add new Portraits of Generosity stories - Donor Stories | Give | The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region
- Develop and execute the Foundation’s social media strategy across all platforms (currently LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram). Tie these to mission-related activities that help grow understanding about the impact of the Foundation.
- Manage email communications through Constant Contact or similar platforms, including targeted campaigns, event invitations, and newsletters.
Media Relations & Public Relations
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with local and regional media to generate coverage of the Foundation and its activities.
- Manage the release of all press announcements, determining message timing, content, and distribution.
- Proactively identify newsworthy stories across all functional areas of the Foundation.
- Maintain the media database and prepare staff for responding to media inquiries as needed.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work with the Vice President for Community Grantmaking to promote the availability of grant and scholarship opportunities.
- Support the Vice President for Development in coordinating donor stewardship communications, including recognition programs and cultivation efforts.
- Support community leadership initiatives, including outreach and communications for community leadership and capacity-building programs.
- Work with all staff to collect stories, reports, photos, videos, and other materials for online and print use.
General
- Ensure proper organization and storage of the Foundation’s historical, archival, and photographic materials.
- Provide staff support as needed to board committees.
- Participate in office and Foundation meetings and activities as necessary.
- Represent the Foundation at community events and with external stakeholders as appropriate.
- Other duties as assigned by the President & CEO.
Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field preferred.
- 5+ years of progressive experience in communications, marketing, or public relations, preferably in the nonprofit or philanthropic sector.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, including public relations and donor-facing writing.
- Experience with website content management systems (e.g., WordPress) and email marketing platforms (e.g., Constant Contact, Mailchimp).
- Strong familiarity with social media strategy, management platforms, tools, tool integration, and leveraging analytics for increased engagement.
- Experience with graphic design tools, video production and editing (Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and/or ability to effectively direct design vendors.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously.
- High level of interpersonal skills; demonstrated poise, tact, and diplomacy in handling sensitive and confidential situations.
- Proficient in using AI tools to enhance productivity while ensuring all content authentically reflects the Foundation's distinctive voice and community values.
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small team.
- Deep interest in and commitment to the mission of community philanthropy.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of the job the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear, both in person and by telephone; use of a computer and other office machines is required (copier, fax, and postage machine). Reasonable accommodation will be enacted, if necessary
Summary of Benefits
Paid benefit time includes vacation, sick and 13 holidays. 403(b) immediate eligibility with company matching up to six percent of wages after six-months of employment. Company paid life insurance and additional short-term disability.
